The Traveller's South Korea

Start anywhere in South Korea and within an hour you are somewhere entirely different. Seoul's Bukchon Hanok Village preserves 600-year-old tile-roofed houses within walking distance of one of the world's most hyper-connected cities; take the KTX south and Gyeongju's grass-covered royal tombs erupt from suburban parks in a city where a traffic light can stand next to a stone pagoda without either looking out of place. Gangwon's alpine interior — Seoraksan granite spires, Olympic ski runs, east-coast fishing villages — feels like a separate country from the flat rice-paddy expanse of Jeollanam-do and its thousand-island coast.

The less-visited provinces reward patience. Jeonju's hanok quarter is famous, but Andong's Hahoe Folk Village, deeper into the Confucian north, receives a fraction of the crowds despite being arguably more atmospheric; the aristocratic Ryu family has lived here for 30 generations and the mask dance that takes place on its riverside stage has no equivalent elsewhere in Korea. South Chungcheong's Baekje royal sites at Gongju and Buyeo are among the most important archaeological discoveries in East Asian history — royal tombs filled with gold — yet they remain blissfully uncrowded compared with Gyeongju. Jeju, by contrast, is firmly on the global tourist map: the haenyeo divers, Hallasan's crater lake, and the lava-tube cave of Manjanggul are world-class attractions that deserve every superlative.

Whether you've touched down at Incheon and taken the AREX into Seoul, road-tripped the coastal Olle Trail around Jeju, or made the ferry crossing to the outer Jeollanam-do islands where the only sounds are wind and seabird, South Korea's 17 provinces offer a lifetime of collecting. How many have you made it to?
